Mechanic is AWESOME. Learning to create the right task for a job using Mechanic has opened up possibilities for my gigantic store with hundreds of thousands of items. I no longer have to listen to Shopify's native AI assistant explain the limitations of various Shopify admin tools and features. I can simply whip up a script on Mechanic to request exactly what information I want to see and what changes I want to make. When Shopify's tools leave me dry, I can always just tell Mechanic to solve it programmatically. You can turn a raw request like "check my whole store for items with a compare-at price between $0 and $15, and then add $5 to that price" into code that does exactly that, and you can customize reporting and etc on the success of that request. Lean on AI LLM's to help you build your tasks. It's worth it!

We’ve replaced several apps with just this one! I've used Mechanic for about a year now. Their huge library of pre-built tasks made it easy to get started auto-tagging customers or orders, scheduling product publishing, sending notifications for big orders. Setup was easy. When I needed something custom (a complex order hold and release workflow), I was easily able to learn enough Liquid to modify an existing task to achieve what I wanted. The documentation is good, and their Slack community is also super helpful. If you've ever thought "I wish Shopify could just do X automatically," this is probably your answer.

Mechanic was the answer to a process issue that has taken us months to solve. We were looking to send customer emails when we add a tag to their order or customer record. The key was the email needed to include order specific fields and customer metafields. We had tried multiple apps over several months and nothing could accomplish this. Then we came across Mechanic. Once it was downloaded and setup for email we were able implement our solution in less then an hour. So easy. This app is wonderful. It has a tremendous library of tasks that can be implemented. We are also using it to schedule sale price changes and reverting back to original price. Highly recommend this app.

Mechanic is our most important app for running our store - it handles all of our workflows on the backend, and helps us automate everything from sales, special events, sending orders to vendors, keeping track of preorder, backorders, inventory, and more. It's incredibly powerful and easy to learn for a developer. The documentation is also great, and there is a community on Slack that is ready to help if you run into anything complicated. The developer is also super responsive when you have questions. Overall, we couldn't be happier with Mechanic! This is the best app on Shopify hands down.

I love this app. I got it specifically to sync my blank t-shirt stock across my inventory so that I could offer a bigger range of products without fear of overselling. It has worked brilliantly for that. But also I have found many other uses, my favourite being getting it to check my entire inventory for a specific SKU and based on that add a new SKU in a new size, meaning I could add a new size of shirt to a couple of hundred items with just a few clicks. As well as monthly randomisation of the product order in some of my collections. Not the cheapest app, but the scope when you start to think about what it can do is really quite incredible.

I only had a limited time to test some of the features and then forgot about it. When I returned to check on it, after the trial period was ended, I was met with an incredibly aggressive and rude notification in the menu: "This account is suspended, and Mechanic is no longer processing activity for this store." It makes it sound like some massive policy violations took place and you're banned for life for testing their app!

Everything that is not possible with Shopify Flow is possible with this app. I've had a few questions / difficulties with tasks and Matt has always answered me very quickly and in detail. This is hands down the most incredible app in the app store. Over the years I've used it to automate fulfillment of customized products, support our customer service team with problematic order flagging, build sophisticated data workflows (now that metafields/objects exist), and generally solve so many problems when someone says to me "we need a new app that does X" or "can you source a software that does Y". If you're creative, if you're a systems-minded person...you can almost always leverage Mechanic to solve your complex automation problem on shopify

(March 2025 Edit: 4+ years on and Mechanic is serving us as well as ever. You couldn't ask for a better partner for your Shopify store!) It's rare that I feel passionate about a Shopify App, let alone any app at all. Mechanic however—I'm in love . Shopify has incredible API support, but it can be challenging to make use of the APIs to their fullest, even for a seasoned developer. Even if you have the skills, you still need to build your own application to make use of the APIs, worry about choosing a build environment, hosting, deployment, maintenance, downtime, and all the other stuff that comes with a custom solution. Alternatively, you can use an automator/integrator like Zapier, but then you're limited to the functionality that the automator platform chooses to expose. Mechanic removes all that, and give you access to the full power of Shopify's API's, all using the familiar language of liquid that so many of us developers work with day in and day out. It used to be that if I needed a small custom solution for one of our shops, I would spend days trying to remember how to set up a Ruby environment, get it hosted on Heroku, get webhooks working, and then have a barely working application that did just that one thing and nothing else. Since using Mechanic for the past half-year, I honestly don't think I'll ever build a custom Shopify application again. Mechanic has empowered to me to create all kinds of solutions for our business that I never even considered attempting in the past—the barrier to entry was just too high. With Mechanic, I can just write a task to do whatever I want, and best of all, *have fun doing it.*

Mechanic is such a thoughtful app. It finally solved a small but super annoying issue we’d had for years—our shipping insurance (a digital item) wasn’t auto-fulfilling properly. I’d even reached out to the insurance provider, UPS Capital, but they were completely useless at helping us fix it. It didn’t mess with our day-to-day operations, but it always bugged me. I’d tried every workaround I could think of and nothing worked... until Mechanic. It fixed the issue immediately. Also, the team behind the app is incredible. Real humans who are kind, responsive, and clearly want to help your business succeed. That kind of support is rare. I'm looking forward to finding many more ways Mechanic will help us optimize our backend operations. Highly recommend.

Mechanic is the bets tool for automation of flows in Shopify. I tried a few other well know tools, and Flow, and none of them could do what I needed easily - essentially a customer makes a purchase and within 0 seconds to 5 minutes after that purchase we'll receive digital stock of the product... I needed a way to check and re-check for the digital product, then trigger a fulfilment email to the customer. Not only did Mechanic make this easy but it already had a built in flow! Support is incredible - highly responsive, clear and super friendly. And the "pay as you feel" is not just words - they really mean that. I have just started out and that has helped me no end. Thanks Mechanic. You are the best!!!!!

Excellent. You can do incredible things with this app. The support rules, they are so kind and really care about solving your Shopify puzzles and breaking you free of Shopify’s basic limitations! Mechanic is THE BEST app on Shopify hands down. It should have a lot more 5 star reviews then it currently has now. Support is great! Isaac, Matt and the team on slack does such an awesome job helping answer questions for trouble shooting tasks or even task writing. Even if you're not writing your own tasks, the task library constantly have new tasks that provides great utility uses in your everyday operations. The pricing philosophy is one of the best I've ever seen. The team really does work with you regardless of if you're a small or big revenue merchant. Why is Mechanic the best? Just think Shopify Flow, but on steroids. It can do almost any task to make your backend operations organized and fluid. Need to tag orders that is the customer's first order? Or tagging customer for membership product and removing it after the membership duration is over? There's a task for that. As of now there are 332 tasks in the task library. Best App for Shopify! It saved me a lot of money for custom Apps. With this app I was able to create all features, which I needed for my shop. I created a custom booking platform with all the automated email flows and in addition to that I was able to build an exclusive trainer backend on my shopify page, to get my trainers the possibility to check all the relevant information for their courses and create new courses on their own without accessing the shopify backend and seeing all the numbers and data. Absolute gamechanger! Even if you are not that gifted with the best programming skills it is possible to reach your goals. If there are any problems you have the documentation, the best support I ever experienced and the big as forum, in which i also always got an answer or at least very good tips for my problems. Dont hesitate to reach out for them! Thanks to Matt himself for solving many of my problems through the customer support!!

Useful! Great app tu automate and to integrate with Shopify Flow. Fills-in the needs we have. WHAT a brilliant company and app! "did you know Mechanic can do this out of the box without any custom API coding? Click here…” I am using Mechanic to do tasks that I previously used Integromat to accomplish, but using Mechanic is faster, cheaper and arguably better since it is tightly integrated with Shopify. Tasks such as: 1. Capture order payment upon fulfillment Upon the fulfillment of an authorized or partially paid order, this task attempts to capture all open authorized payments for that order. (Multiple authorizations can exist on edited orders or with post-purchase upsells.) 2. Auto-tag orders with UTM parameters This task automatically tags incoming orders with the UTM campaign, content, medium, source, and/or term associated with the customer’s visit. 3. Auto-tag customers when their order is tagged This task watches for order tags, and adds a corresponding tag to the customer whenever a known order tag is found 4. Send an event to Klaviyo when a fulfillment is out_for_delivery yup -- this will replace other apps that do ONLY delivery notifications. so 5, 6, 7 tasks are all fulfillment related. ALL ENABLED WITH ESSENTIALLY ZERO CODE Support was fast to reply when I had a basic onboarding question. The Slack community is also a huge positive. Did I say the documentation is spectacular? Mechanic can be a geeky as you want it to be, but it can also dumb down for non-coders. I'll update this review in a month, then again in a year. But after 7-days, OMG this is a wonderfully powerful addition to any store. 5-stars

Probably the most powerful app on Shopify. Mechanic is a tremendously amazing workflow automation app that we can't live without. It allows for all sorts of tasks (e.g. Tag an order if a discount code is used, send out a discount code if an order contains X, change a fulfillment location based on customer address). There are templated tasks that are also infinitely customizable for your needs. Mechanic is an essential app for our shopify shops. We were able to quickly install it and easily use already custom made scripts/tasks. We required a specialized task and we were able to join the Mechanic App's Slack and make a post asking to hire someone to help us write a script that would automatically set compare-at prices for our products based on the product category. Someone replied to us within a few minutes and had exactly what we needed coded by the next day with a very reasonable price. I mainly installed this app to help manage my orders for my handmade items. I am limited to how many I can take per day, but with a large inventory it’s impossible to be manually monitoring and deactivating (plus this leads to enquiries ‘wHy CaN’t I oRdEr’, because FAQs are obviously just there for fun!). Plus it’s impossible to monitor when you are sleeping I use the task which limits daily orders and had a number of back and forths with Isaac to get this set up. He was extremely patient and thorough with me, and I now have a store that is perfectly self managed! Can’t recommend enough!

TLDR; 1) If you're a developer, you owe it to yourself to learn and use this app. 2) Read the Manual! It will save you a lot of time and frustration. Long version: Are you a developer? Then why aren't you using this app yet?! Seriously, this app will change the way you build your shopify stores. The amount of power this app offers you is simply unparalleled. We use Integromat (similar to Zapier) to automate a lot of backend stuff for us, and Mechanic has been slowly replacing those workflows with cleaner, more native-feeling solutions. It's also given us the ability to do a lot of things we couldn't even do before. Mechanic has a bit of a learning curve, but the way it's built around the liquid code that every shopify developer knows helps you to feel right at home after a couple days. One tip though...RTFM!!! I know we all like to just dive in and figure things out on our own, but trust me, you will waste a lot of time by not orienting yourself with the basic concepts of how Mechanic works. An understanding of Actions, Events, Webhooks, Tasks, and Runs is ESSENTIAL. You'll also want to read over the Mechanic Liquid documentation, as they've added a number of extensions to the language that help with things like handling arrays and hashes. Lastly, support is awesome, and there's a friendly little Slack community where you can get help and help others out. PS- Lightward's pay-what-you-think-is-fair pricing structure is amazing, especially for a developer-oriented, usage-based app like this. In our case, we thought we were getting far more value from the app than their suggested subscription plan, so we opted to pay more than they asked. In other cases though, I could see us paying less if we weren't making very heavy use of the app on one of our stores. I wish this was more common, as we've come across some great apps in the past where we just couldn't justify the subscription cost, since we were being charged for a bunch of features that we weren't using.

My company uses Mechanic to automatically print orders, add free gifts to orders as part of promotions, automatically update our iContact mailing lists with Shopify customers... the use cases are endless! And the team at Lightward is soooo helpful, they are quick to respond to requests and always provide ample information and development support. Developers: GET IN THE SLACK CHANNEL! It's awesome how much help you can get and how friendly people are. I was reluctant to do it because I'm clueless when it comes to Liquid, but being in there earlier would have saved me tons of time and they are really really nice to beginners. Mechanic has been the single most important app that has allowed us to diversity our product and service offering, monitor order progress, communicate with customers and shift our business to a more online and COVID conscious platform all while saving us money! Mechanic has allowed us to clean up our apps by consolidating entire suites and eliminating multiple single focused apps. Mechanic has greatly improved our communication with customers and facilitated delivery of digital services to customers. Mechanic gives us the ability to tag and therefore track orders, customer behavior and products automatically. Mechanic also helps enormously with internal communication with automatic emails that have fully customizable templates using liquid variables. These are only a few of the amazing features of Mechanic, but are enough to make it more than worth it. Mechanic is so powerful and helpful, and I believe we have only begun to scratch the surface. It is very easy to use and very intuitive but also allows for much, much deeper customization with a little bit of coding knowledge. I recommend Mechanic for any store and highly recommend that it be the first app that is installed. I only wish we had discovered it sooner. Mechanic is the kind of app that takes advantage of the Shopify platform fully. A store can and should build itself around Mechanic. Lightward has been great supporting us and our store and a team that you can feel really good about supporting!

wow. I have no idea why this functionality isn't included in Shopify by default. But this app does exactly what it says it does, which is amazing! Isaac (the dev) is the kind of person we need more of - you can sense the empathy and understanding in all of the communication. You know how you've see help files and you can tell they're written from a place of frustration (the writer doesn't seem to care about the reader). You can tell Isaac genuinely wants this app to solve your problem, and will write stuff in such a way to make that as likely as possible to happen (and it works). You can probably replace a ton of apps with this, and make them work exactly how you want them to. And feel good about paying for it.

It's been great to do some minor things without need for a backend. An absolutely stunning app. Already consolidated 4 apps down into just this one and with extra functionality on top! Great cost saver. I was originally looking for a way to email a customer automatically when an order is automatically tagged as SpecialOrder. This app did that and more including emailing customers who placed orders on eBay to tell them about our main website, pushing out of stock products to bottom of collections, automatically tagging instock/out of stock/sale and not sale items, emailing us when a customer places 2 or more separate orders so we can combine and save shipping, adding eBay usernames to tag so can be searched in orders tab, automatically emailing customer for pre-orders and more! I highly recommend scrolling through all 250+ tasks already in this app on the main website, I was literally smiling as I found more and more useful tasks and realising I can remove some paid apps (That cost even more than this one!). This app is perfect for even those with limited coding/liquid experience, every task has a simple config area and you can always click to show the full code that is being done if you need to tweak small bits to suit your business. The support is great as well, quick replies and additions or updates to current tasks means checking back you may find a new or updated task that suits your use or improve one your already using. Seriously cannot recommend this App enough, cant believe I didn't find it sooner.

There are a couple of apps I, as a developer, recommend for every Shopify store. OrderlyEmails is one of them. And now, Mechanic is another one of them. Mechanic exists to automate your chores and improve workflows. Do you need a nightly report of products that went out of stock? Or maybe you want an immediate notification when a staff (or you!) created a free product on your website? Maybe you want to know if products are missing images. Or for us, how we wanted to know the tally of orders marked with a specific date and 'Pickup Order' so we could judge how many orders are for pickup everyday. Or another favourite -- how much of each product do I need to fulfill all my pending orders? The possibilities are limitless with Mechanic, and the best part is -- all of the above which would've been separate apps, come under one beautiful app which does exactly what you want to do without fiddling with anything. This app is wonderful on its own with its several hundred built-in tasks. The app is on steroids if you have a developer who will write custom tasks for you. Best app I use for my store: if you are not a developper, you can use one of the numerous pre-made tasks. Many of them are incredibly useful and fulfill tasks for which you would usually need to pay for a dedicated app => you can save money and stop buying apps for every single feature you need. I you are a developper, you can do stuff that are so advanced, you can pretty much do almost everything you need. And also the support is incredible. I have asked for help numerous times because I am a clumsy developper, and I was always assisted with detailed instructions way beyond what you could ask for a support team.

Mechanic has allowed us to add complex functionality to our site that would've only been possible by creating a custom app. A core part of our business requires data from external APIs and Mechanic allowed us to develop custom tasks to connect to these sources seamlessly. We were able to easily convert our business logic into the necessary custom tasks and streamline our workflow. We could focus on developing the tasks without the need to worry about all the underlying infrastructure which was great. I would posit that this is very likely to be the BEST VALUE app on app store. And yes, I know it's not a free one. It's actually much better than the description here because it already has about 190 tasks ready to roll (including several I requested myself). I installed this a couple of weeks ago for two jobs; to tag customers based on the product type they ordered and to create and maintain a Recent Products Collection. It has done this easily and with idiot proof configuration options. Mechanic does SO much more. So many of the pre-written tasks seem to be really useful and replace a bunch of other apps that are out there in the app store. . Give me a while and I will set up some more tasks and provide another review but in the meantime this is my favourite app so far discovered. **Update 4 months later ** I cheekily requested several more tasks a couple of days ago and the wonderful support was highly responsive as before. They are clearly more than competent but also seem to genuinely care. They have superb communication skills and has cheerfully helped me out very quickly again, and then provided follow on support when I couldn't resolve a simple issue myself. Gawd they are good! One of the few firm who actually go the extra mile and deliver top quality service. I see there are now 235 tasks prebuilt and I'm slightly embarrassed at what a low price I am paying for all this functionality and support - and at what good value this is, especially when compared to so many other apps here. I've just counted up the tasks I am running and it's around 20. Rather more than the original two I had bought the app for! If I was a developer instead of a merchant, I expect I'd be getting even more from it. I recognise this is a rather gushing review: it's not normally my style - but credit where credit's due! Thank you so much to Isaac and team. You deserve great success. Kudos to you! :)

I love this developer-friendly powerful app. It does exactly what it says, and automates things based on specific logical conditions. I'm using this for managing customer tags, auto-fulfilling certain orders, handling the membership approval and removal of my site, and it hasn't let me down yet. In fact, looking at the catalogue of possible automations is quite the fun rabbit hole to get distracted playing with. The flexibility and reliability are exactly what I was hoping for. The customer support is AMAZING. I am seriously impressed with the developer's commitment to support their software in a personable, humble, and reliable way. I can't say enough great things about this app and the developer. I'm using locksmith (also from this developer), mechanic, and a membership payment processing app (from a different developer), so if this developer were to make one of the latter, I'd switch over in a heartbeat.

This is an extremely well designed app that gives you tremendous functionality. Some of the extensions they have added to Liquid to help you write tasks are so valuable - hash, array, cache, parse_jason - I wish they would be added to core Shopify Liquid! The documentation is extensive and Isaac is extremely responsive. Tasks that I expected I would have to automate outside Shopify using serverless AWS are now all implemented inside Mechanic - making my life much easier.

Hands down the #1 most useful app I have ever installed. If you're a developer I guarantee you're especially going to love this app because you can literally write your own automated tasks to do whatever you want to do - in liquid-style code - how cool! No need to install 30 different apps to perform a bunch of automated tasks - you can write your own tasks or use many of the ones the Mechanic team provides! Worth every penny. There is no other app of its kind on the app store that I've seen. There's a lot of functionality in this app - I highly recommend spending time playing around with the tasks included with Mechanic and using them as templates to create your own tasks. I'm really happy with this app so far. I am using it to do a bunch of different tasks. E.g. email customers about outstanding order payments. Send them email when an order is taking too long and so forth. It's not saving me any money yet on my other apps as it doesn't quite do what they do. But hopefully it will in the future.

Mechanic helped us automate capturing payments. For internal fulfillment reasons, we needed to turn off auto-capture of payments until the end of each day. Rather than having to go in and manually do it at the end of each day, Mechanic allows us to capture expedited shipments immediately and everything else just before midnight each day. It solved our problem. I'm looking forward to using it for other tasks too. Isaac was super helpful. He created multiple scripts for our specific needs in about a day.

the two most important apps i got is Mechanic and a reporting app. without those, shopify management can be a nightmare. they weren't kidding about the base tasks they got. you will definitely have something you can use out of the box. as for the stuff that aren't on it, well, you got Isaac and his team who can help you through the minefield of code.

I use Mechanic to do TONS of different tasks. Simple things like sending out emails when new customers sign up at my store or sending out customized emails when orders are placed. Also advanced things like auto populating customer information (notes, tags, shipping addresses, etc.) based off of selections made during the customer registration process. Copying notes and tags from customer records to the orders those customers place. And more! Issac is probably one of the best things about this app. He is always there to answer questions, or help me write a custom task to accomplish what I'm trying to do. This app is pretty awesome. I'm a new Shopify user, so as I was developing my first site, I kept running into problems where I could anticipate little things taking forever to do. I reached out to the developer, Isaac, and he was beyond helpful! As I came up with different things I thought could be beneficial, he custom-coded them and added them to the Mechanic template library for me and others to be able to use. The subscription price that's based on your Shopify plan is unique in the sense that the number of 'actions' allowed in a month is unlimited for the one flat-rate whereas a lot of other similar apps charge per-action (which becomes SUPER expensive very quickly). As I was exploring other apps, some seemed a little more user-friendly, but much more expensive. And with the support I've gotten from Isaac, this is a no-brainer. The only thing that I could hope for in the future would be an option for a bit more basic-user-friendliness. While I can completely understand the abilities of Mechanic being awesome for advanced users, those of us who don't know Liquid well enough to hand-code it could benefit from a WYSIWYG interface (where I could select from a dropdown menu 'If is met, do '). This would be more similar to what I understand to be Mechanic's predecessor, ifShop. Overall, 5 stars on functionality and service!

This app might as well be called 'sonic screwdriver', it is so versatile and helps us do what we want. Without this app, we'd have to use a lot of other different apps that don't interact well with each other and have lots of manual steps and workarounds. With the Mechanic app, we can set up a rule that when X happens we need data Y to be moved to location Z while adding A, B, and C. This lets us fine-tune our workflows on the admin end (saving staff time) and reduce unnecessary delays/steps for our customers (making it easier for them to shop). For example, we require our customers to create an account to make a purchase, but the name that they enter in the account creation process doesn't automatically populate into the order form, so they have to enter it again. Isaac set up a task for us that lets us have the customer enter their name once and Mechanic auto-populates the name in the other locations. We also use Isaac's app Locksmith, which has a feature where the customer can enter a unique, single-use passcode (which they get from elsewhere). A Mechanic task allows us to store the passcode in the customer's file in case they lose it. And we have some reports that need to be in very specific formats for other services we use. Rather than downloading the raw data from Shopify and manipulating it in Excel before uploading to the other service, Isaac was able to work with us to not only get our store to spit out the report already in the correct format, but to upload it to the service as well! The value we've gotten out of this app will allow our staff to focus on improving the customer experience instead of performing repeated time-consuming tasks. Whenever I reach a roadblock trying to figure out how to get our store to do something, I reach out to Isaac and he's always got a solution!
